According to a Zen Story, A Zen roshi is dying. All of the monks gather-an eagerness restrained-around the deathbed, hoping to be chosen as the next teacher. The roshi asks slowly, "Where is the gardener?" "The gardener," the monks wonder aloud."He is just a simple man who tends the plants, and he is not even ordained.""Yes," the roshi replies. "But he is the only one awake.
He will be the next teacher."

As soon as the weather turns warmer, I get spring fever. There's nothing I love more than to help my garden wake up from the winter. There's so much to do -- removing winter mulch, pruning, transplanting, preparing new beds. I enjoy every minute of it. It is easy to quiet my mind, be completely "in the moment" and focus on the tasks at hand. I once read that to plant a garden is to believe in the possibilities and beauty of tomorrow. If we see ourselves as a garden, and tend to ourselves with love and care, we open ourselves up to limitless possibilities for happiness.
