In the center is a ceramic bowl, reminiscent of Tibetan begging bowls. A zen story tells us if we present a full bowl of rice to the universe, the universe cannot fill it. But if we can present an empty bowl, the universe can flll it.

Our emotions were drained and emptied after September 11th. We can only pray that the universe will fill that void with hope and blessings.

I created this altar shortly after September 11, 2001. The colors are particularly inspired by the wound we all experienced. The American flag pin was made by a local brownie troop to show support for our country. Photographs of the people in shadows are meant to symbolize the twin towers. The altar contains the Lord's Prayer, as well as fragments of prayers from various faiths. The shells are meant to symbolize rebirth, because in times of death and deep tragedy, there is the hope of life and renewal.
